On Saturday, May 7, from 2 to 4 p.m., the Donald E. Davis Arboretum will host a memorial service in honor of the late R. Oneal Smitherman. Smitherman served on the faculty of the College of Agriculture from 1967 to 1994. His research was in the areas of fish breeding, aquaculture production and fish genetics and he taught classes in the areas of fish breeding and aquaculture production systems. Additionally, for the last 40 years Smitherman documented, identified, collected, grew and even hybridized native rhododendrons. From Samford Hall to the President’s Home, Auburn University possesses hundreds of specimens of native azaleas donated by Smitherman. However, the collection in the Donald E. Davis Arboretum is the most spectacular. More than 450 plants have been donated to the arboretum, making it one of the most complete collections of native azaleas in the country.
